Hey.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in stroke, travel and art.

Hand Splint

Hand Splint

A splint is defined as "a rigid or flexible device that maintains in position a displaced or movable part; also used to keep in place and protect an injured part" or as "a rigid or flexible material used to protect, immobilize, or restrict motion in a part". A splint is something that's used to keep a person's arm or leg straight and immobile

I use splints for my foot and hand after my stroke both to aid my mobility and prevent further tightening of my hand. I was concerned about my hand and my physiotherapist suggested a splint called ‘Second Skin’. I asked her to book me in for an assessment.

I went to William Merritt centre for an assessment for my new arm and hand splint. My physiotherapist came too to help me get measured up. The woman measured my hand and arm and also the rigidity of my hand to know what level of strength my splint would need. The woman said the splint will be ready in six weeks. I was very excited and eagerly awaiting the delivery date, having also arranged my hand botox appointment to make sure my hand was as flexible as possible for the delivery of the splint.

Unfortunately, due to Covid, the splint was delayed and I also had to delay my botox appointment. I also couldn’t go back to the William Merritt centre for a fitting and Second Skin sent the splint to my home. The lady from Second Skin then had a zoom session with me and my physiotherapist to help me fit it. I was so excited for the splint that I couldn’t wait and me and my husband tried the splint as soon as it arrived. I had the zoom session a week later just to make sure it fit correctly.
